MilanoAt first glance, the city appears rather hectic, but after a brief period of orientation, it reveals its urbane charm combined with old baroque architecture such as the Duomo, Milan’s cathedral. The Duomo, the third largest church in the world, was constructed out of light-coloured marble at the beginning of the 14th century. It is possible to reach the cathedral’s roof by lift, from where visitors to Milan can enjoy the fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. There is no old town centre to speak of, as is the case in most Italian cities, because the historic buildings are interspersed with glass-fronted palaces and high-rises, which have their attractions too. Milan is a city brimming with trade fairs, culture and a diverse media landscape and as such is very modern and chic. The Milanese really know how to dress in style – the city is a Mecca of the international fashion scene. The best time to visit the city is in spring or autumn, as high temperatures and heavy traffic can result in unbearably bad air in the summer. |
