Rome

In 753 BC, Romulus, the first king of Rome, marked out the city boundary, thus laying the foundations for an expansion the likes of which had never been seen before. By the 2nd century BC, the Romans already enjoyed dominance over the whole Mediterranean.

The following centuries were marked by internal conflicts between individual groups and representatives of the church. Accord was only reached in 1870, when Rome became the capital of the newly-founded Kingdom of Italy as it has remained to this very day in the Republic.
