TuscanyA picture-book landscape and absolutely ideal for rambling through unspoilt nature between vineyards, pine forests and cypress trees. Tuscany gets its name from the Etruscan empire that was occupied by the Romans in the 5th century BC and was then annexed by the Frankish Empire for a short while. Later, it was ruled by independent city states like Florence and Lucca. Form 1860 onwards, the region, with Florence as its capital, was once again part of a united Italy. The 900-year-old cathedral in the small town of Pisa (approx. 100.000 inhabitants) is well worth a visit, but it was the leaning tower (Torre Pendente) that gained the town its international acclaim and is therefore also a must on any touring schedule. The region’s cultural hub is nevertheless Florence (approx. 500,000 inhabitants). |
