Venice

Venice

The capital of the northern Italian region of Veneto once formed the economic hub of the East...

Venice has a wide variety of attractions to offer, but is above all a focus of international cultural tourism. Venice’s association with the romantic image of a couple in a gondola beneath the Bridge of Sighs, while not entirely untrue, is not quite correct either.

While young couples in search of romance are well advised to take a trip to Venice, the city with its countless canals, churches and bridges offers those interested in culture plenty more to see. Some 300,000 people live in the city that covers both the mainland and 118 islands, separated by some 160 canals and linked together by 400 bridges. There is a general ban on cars throughout the entire city.

Due to its excellent geographical location, Venice was able to forge eastward and in Europe with a policy of expansion that lasted some five centuries and enjoyed a clear advantage over rivals like the Genoese. This led to unparalleled wealth and a cultural heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries, the most famous advocates of which are doubtlessly Monteverdi and Vivaldi.
